A Quick Welcome

Jan 13, 2021

Hi, everyone --

While my previous blog post may have given some starting thoughts on the year and how we might approach things as we move forward, I neglected to give a proper welcome.

I'll spare you all a lengthy introduction of myself for now.  If you'd all like a more thorough version, let us know, and I'll be sure to do something when I know there's absolutely nothing better for me to do [insert winky face here].  Suffice it to say, I've been in the exercise science field for a little while and observed some gaps and issues that Alex and I both would like to address in what ways we can.  I'm an educator by profession and by passion, and it's through that lens that I'd like to approach a lot of my work here.

While there is a TON of information out there on all sorts of topics relating to health, exercise, nutrition, training, etc., it can be really hard to separate sense from nonsense.  The industry seems dominated by a lot of personalities with ulterior motives, tribes with allegiances, and "professionals" with chips on their shoulders.  The result is a field full of misleading claims and -- perhaps this is even worse -- bad or nonexistent discussions.

That's one of the big things we'd like to foster.  We want to share good information, but moreover, we want it to spark better thinking and better conversations in everyone who engages with that information.  We sometimes learn the most from challenging others' ideas and having our own ideas challenged.  We get better, and we gain a better understanding of which notions can hold up to scrutiny.  I'm happy to teach fundamentals of biomechanics and physiology, explore some myths, or break down how to read a research paper... but I'm even happier to help people to understand why they should be thinking about these concepts in the first place and to arm them with the ability to do their own debunking when the time comes.

To that end, we'll be here.  Posting new content, engaging in the community forum, hosting Q&A sessions, and more.  This is not a passive endeavor for us whereby we just post stuff, and you read it; it is an active process where there will be interaction that goes both ways, and you all help to build this resource into something truly -- if you'll permit me a tired cliche -- game-changing.

I hope to see you all in the forums and look forward to some good conversations.
