Name: Melissa McMaster
Goal: Complete 1/2 marathon sub 3 hours, post hip surgery
1.) Tell us about your recent success in training.
I recently completed a half marathon under the time limit I set for my self. This is a huge success for me because this time last year I was recovering from hip surgery. I never thought I would be able to complete a 5K let alone a half marathon. Even more satisfying is that I have been able to train for the half marathon while also making improvements with my lifts in the gym. Competing this goal has given me an amazing sense of self confidence and the motivation to continue to improve.
1.) What were your biggest fears going into this race?
My biggest fear going into the race was not finishing and having to be picked up by the pace vehicle. I have never been a strong runner and after my hip surgery last April I was very fearful that I just would not make it.
2.) How did you prepare for it mentally?
I was able to overcome this fear by constantly reminding myself that I have trained for this and that I am prepared. Per Joy’s recommendation, the night before the race I sat in a quiet place and visualized myself finishing the race, I imagined what that would feel like. I also told myself that I am prepared and that this is not the time to worry that this is the time to demonstrate all of my hard work.
3.) When you first started with Complete Human Performance, what did you expect?
When I first signed up for coaching I was looking for someone to help me make sense of all the work out and nutritional information that was out there. It was very difficult for me to open up to someone and tell them everything I wanted to change and everything I want to achieve. When I contacted Joy my hope was that she would truly understand my past and help me to overcome it.
4.) When you finished the race, what is the first thing you thought of?
When I saw the finish line of the race, I was amazed. I was so surprised to see it there within my reach. To see how I was finishing the race and completing this goal was not only obtainable but was only a few yards in front of me. As I crossed the finish line and navigated through the maze of volunteers handing me water and protein bars, It really hit me that I just successfully completed a half marathon! I had wanted to complete this goal with such a passion that it felt absolutely surreal. I finally proved to myself what I was capable of doing, and that felt incredible.
5.) What are your plans for training now?
My training plans now will still be focused on making strength improvement in the gym while training to run another half marathon in June. I will specifically be working towards improving my running form in order to gain efficiency and speed.
6.) How did CHP help you personally?
Reaching out to Joy Victoria was the best decision, regarding my health, that I have ever made. Working with Joy I have been able to make sense of all the work out and nutrition information I have had buzzing around my head for the last few years. She has taught me how to make sense of it all and how to apply it to my life. I knew what I needed to do, but I needed her to help me figure out how to do it.
